Social issues: Sexism

There are a lot of social issues in our society. All of them are the same as important, but today I will talk about sexism. It is known that since a long time ago, even since the beginning of humanity, men and women had different roles. And it is obviously because we are different in some ways, like maternity for example, and the strength that allows men to do more physical things than women. But we have the same capacities when we talk about intelligence. And I think that today it’s ridiculous to discriminate a woman at a job just because she is a woman even if she has the same degree and experience than a man asking for the same job, as bad as to pay less salary to a woman at the same job, or to fire a pregnant woman, as if being pregnant was being disabled or something like that.  I think that people that discriminate by sex is so backward, because in these days we know that we all have the same capacities and if in the past women could not develop themselves in some intellectual aspects it was because of the chauvinisim that they didn’t have the same opportunities as men.

We are still far from completely eradicating sexism. I have known some young moms, which everyone expects that they would teach their sons not to be chauvinistic, but they still attend them differently than the treat they give for the daughters. So we should start from education, especially with boys, and teach them to help with the house things, for example, in the same way there has been always taught to girls in the families by the time. If we are able to do that, we will change the sexism in our society from the beginning and it will disappear forever.

The Internet: Good or Evil?

My grandmother used to say ‘Everything in excess is bad’, I think this expression fits so good with my opinion about the Internet. I think that as a source of information it is very useful for us. But the control of that information is almost impossible, and I’m talking about information that is uploaded as much as the information that we can see throw our screen. I think that this is a problem for the education of children, because they know how to use the internet so good, in most cases even better than their parents, so they can see a lot of things that may be inappropriate for their ages and the parents just can’t control the access to that information.

In the other hand, some people say that the new generations are lazy, because in other times if children needed some information, they had to look for hours in thousands of books and things like that and now it is not necessary, they just put a key word on google and they can find all the information they need. But I think it is not true. Maybe looking for something at Internet requires less effort than looking for it in books, but the learning after studying it is the same. Actually in less time they can access to much more information, so we can say that searching in the Internet allow them to study more.

In conclusion, I think that the internet is a good thing when we use it responsibly. We have to accompany the youngers and talk to them about the things they could find accidentally with confidence and maturity. We will be always improving our technology and we have to learn how to use it in the best way. The internet is a good tool, but as my grandmother said, ‘Everything in excess is bad’.

The best holiday I've ever had

Last summer I had the best holiday ever! I travelled with my boyfriend, my best friend and two of my cousins by plane to Calama and then moved by bus to San Pedro. We stayed there one night in a hostel and started our trip to Bolivia. We took a 3-day jeep tour from San Pedro to Uyuni trough the Altiplano. The whole trip was perfect but I think this tour was the best part of it. I could never imagine how beautiful the altiplano was without being there.
At the altiplano there are several lagoons whose water has different colours. The first we saw was the white lagoon, then the green lagoon and finally the red lagoon. It was very impressive to see that the colour of the lagoons was exactly like its name said. The lagoons have different minerals that make the water take those beautiful colours. All those awesome lagoons had a lot of flamingos on their water.  We learnt to differentiate the three types of flamingo: the Chilean one, the flamingo andino and the James flamingo. At the tour we also saw the Stone Tree and the Stone Condor, eroded rocks that took exactly the form of a tree and a condor respectively. At the altiplano we stayed in a refuge where we had dinner and spent the night. The refuge was something like 4500 msnm and it was very difficult to breathe and so to get asleep. At the end of the tour we arrived to Uyuni Salt Lake. It is really amazing. It’s so big that you can’t see its edge. If the last night it rained in Uyuni, the salt lake seems like a huge mirror, and you can see the whole sky and clouds reflected on it. It was an extraordinary experience.

Highs 'n Lows of my neighborhood

I live in La Reina, and the things I like about my neighborhood are more than the things I dislike. In my neighborhood there are a lot of green areas, which is a very good thing because I have great places where to go walking with my dog. Another thing I like about my neighborhood is that there are lots of facilities near my house, banks, mini and supermarkets, post office, even restaurants and coffees. The connection with the rest of the city is good. I have the bus stop just at the corner of my street and I can go walking to the subway. One thing I love about my neighborhood is that I live in a Pasaje, so I have great relationships with all my neighbors and I used to play a lot with my friends when I was younger. There are also bad things. I live in an avenue, which has a lot of traffic and the fastness of the vehicles is so dangerous for people and pets. Another low fact of my neighborhood is that we had suffered some burglaries in our house. I really hate this last thing.
