Social issues: Sexism

There are a lot of social issues in our society. All of them are the same as important, but today I will talk about sexism. It is known that since a long time ago, even since the beginning of humanity, men and women had different roles. And it is obviously because we are different in some ways, like maternity for example, and the strength that allows men to do more physical things than women. But we have the same capacities when we talk about intelligence. And I think that today it’s ridiculous to discriminate a woman at a job just because she is a woman even if she has the same degree and experience than a man asking for the same job, as bad as to pay less salary to a woman at the same job, or to fire a pregnant woman, as if being pregnant was being disabled or something like that.  I think that people that discriminate by sex is so backward, because in these days we know that we all have the same capacities and if in the past women could not develop themselves in some intellectual aspects it was because of the chauvinisim that they didn’t have the same opportunities as men.

We are still far from completely eradicating sexism. I have known some young moms, which everyone expects that they would teach their sons not to be chauvinistic, but they still attend them differently than the treat they give for the daughters. So we should start from education, especially with boys, and teach them to help with the house things, for example, in the same way there has been always taught to girls in the families by the time. If we are able to do that, we will change the sexism in our society from the beginning and it will disappear forever.

  1. Hi isabel, I liked your post a lot and learned a new word "chauvinism" jejeje.

My opinion of the sexism in chilean society is that the origin of them is imporved by man and woman. Yes women... They has been the promoters of culture by centuries in the world, in Chile is not the exception.

We all are sons of mothers, lol? and she draw the basis of the cultural development of men and women... And I`d noticed that mothers starts avoiding the sexism, but, at the end she thinks in the sexist way... but unwilling to do so, because this problem is more deep than we can imagine.

  2. What a nice issue have you chosen :P
I really hope that the evolution of human societies will lead to a non-sexist civilizations. Where respect and equality rule the base of social interactions.

Honestly I agree with most of the problems that you have identified, specially labour activities.

  3. Isabel,
    WC: 307. Good.

I agree with you, women sometimes educate their children to be sexist, men do too, of course, and so it seems to be inevitable. I liked your text, though some part in the central ideas it was not really fluent.
    Check these:

… All of them are (the same as) VERY important,
… I think that people that discriminate by sex is so backward??
    Cheers,
